Whittle School & Studio

Whittle School & Studio

4000 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington DC

Project Overview

The Whittle School & Studio’s first North American campus is situated on 13.7 wooded acres in northwestern DC. Immediately surrounded by nature, the campus offers the illusion of a “school in a park,” despite its urban environment.

Renzo Piano and his team are transforming the interior of the existing 20th-century building, designed by Australian architect John Andrews. When complete, the building will feature a bright public entry with sweeping views into three of the school’s performance spaces. Five glass-enclosed courtyards will be transformed into student commons, serving as the main location for day-to-day activities. Students will also have the opportunity to learn and grow in a LEED Silver Certified building that adheres to sustainability initiatives.
